SMART TOOLS TO ASSESS WATER QUALITY

Hurricane Dorian stroke the Grand Bahama in August 2019. The Cat 5 hurricane caused severe damages to the Island’s water infrastructure. The seawater covered the wellfield surfaces and saltwater penetrated the aquifer, contaminating the groundwater with high salinity and total dissolved solids (TDS). GBUC initiated a fast-track restoration program using smart tools such as geophysics, GIS, hydraulic and water quality models, to assess the damage of the freshwater lenses in the groundwater. Specifically, the water quality model was effectively used in simulating alternative actions. These tools were instrumental in assisting GBUC in defining a fast-track course of action. A new wellfield was built in the zone that was not impacted by storm, new wells were either installed in between wells that have good water quality, a new water treatment plant and wellfield is currently under design, and a Brackish Water RO treatment plant is in the planning and design phase to be operational in 2021
