Plaa dih Skills
“Plaa di Skills” (Play the Skills) is a program that uses the Fine Arts, specifically Drama, to teach at risk youths how to develop and practice life skills needed in everyday interactions. This innovative method of teaching, uses imagination, intellect, and real-life scenarios to improve and to reinforce critical life skills, especially when having to cope with different cultures and economic conditions. The program aims to accommodate 20-25 young girls between the ages of 13-16 years old from the Southside of Belize, in the Port Loyola constituency. The goal is to have the group meet every Saturday in hopes of addressing specific topics that might be neglected within the home and school such as, sex education, communication, self-esteem, self-control, self-hygiene, cooking skills, abuse (sexual, emotional, physical, psychological), etiquette, self-defense, and building healthy relationships (family, friendship, romantic). The time span of this program would be six months.

- Young girls, specially those between 13-16 years old are going through puberty and are in high school. This means that there is exposure to peer pressure, hormones, sexual urges, body development, and even confusion. Becoming into a young lady requires learning necessary life skills. Unfortunately, some of these young girls are not given enough care and attention because of many reasons, such as too many people in one household, poverty, parents working over-time, etc. For this reason, they start to stray and become delinquent juveniles, that engage in unlawful acts and associate with the wrong groups. They are also unaware of self-care and self-worth, so a simple knowledge of bathing properly, or how to change a sanitary pad may be difficult. During the age of 13-16 years old, a child is very vulnerable. With proper guidance and programs to teach these young girls, they will be better equipped to care for themselves. To combat this problem, the “Plaa dih Skill” program is a necessity to develop and practice life skills needed in everyday interaction.

- Port Loyola, extending from the North Creek to the Port Authority and eastward to the Yarborough Bridge, is located on the Southside of Belize. There is a school called St. John Vianney Roman Catholic Primary School that is a part of the community. Unfortunately, this area contains some of the worst conditions in Belize City's South-side and has a high crime rate. There are almost 6000 electors in this zone. This area is home to some of the City’s poorest residents. You can find many “London bridges”, old houses, rickety wooden pallets linking dwellings, and low-strung poles in the Port Loyola Area. The community is already involved through the PLOW organization. The "Plaa dih Skill" program will be an extension of a greater initiative to get young girls to improve their holistic health. Volunteers will be asked to partake and oversee the program. This involvement of the community should create better bonds, overall.

- My organization is fortunate enough to receive grant funding to continue the positive work in the community. However, to maintain a program, there are usually other methods that are used to generate resources. These methods include fund raising through food sale (turkey dinner), catering services, movie nights, sewing services, thrift shop (the items are donated), and pantry sales.
